There is a wide range of housing available whether you are looking to either rent or buy across the county of Herefordshire, for those aged 55 years or over.  This can include bedsits, flats or bungalows depending on your own personal needs and where you are seeking to live.

General Housing is a term that is used for the majority of housing advertised through Home Point and are properties suitable for anyone, where it meets their needs. The properties would also be suitable for those with medical needs, who have personal carers or support that is being provided by a support provider, other than a resident landlord or warden.

Sheltered housing is a term covering a wide range or rented housing for older people (55+).  It generally means that there is support provided as part of the tenancy e.g. alarms, wardens and is provided by on site staff.   Sheltered housing schemes in the U.K. are generally owned, run and maintained as social housing by a housing association.    There is a limited supply of sheltered housing across the County of Herefordshire as most support provided to enable independant liviing is assessed according to the indiviual's need and provided by people coming into the home to provide support.

Allbeit limited, some Sheltered housing will be available through Home Point so you will need to register on line and provide all the supporting documents, so that you will be able to bid when properties become available.

There are local housing associations that provide sheltered housing but hold their own waiting lists. These are:-

  • Herefordshire Housing Ltd
  • Platform (formerly Fortis Living)
  • Stonewater (formerly Marches Housing)

Extra care housing is the term used to describe developments for older (55+) and frail,  that comprises self-contained homes with design features and support services available to enable self- care and independent living. There is usually a range of housing types i.e. rented, part buy/part rent and outright ownership.   It is designed with the needs of older people in mind with varying levels of care and support available on site.  Ultimately they are designed to allow independent living. The schemes usually provide accommodation, 24 hour care and support, leisure, social and shopping facilities.

There is only one scheme in the county:

  • The Rose Gardens, Ledbury Road Hereford which provides accommodation for those seeking to rent, part own or outright ownership.

Contact details can be found at www.home-point.info under partners.

There are also smaller housing associations who operate across Herefordshire, but have a limited number of homes that become available.  Although you should still be registered on Home Point, you may wish to consider contacting those listed below to see if they have any vacancies that are suitable for you.
